Pupils make their own minds up on Brexit

Starting with a special assembly on Monday (20 June), our pupils have spent this week considering whether the UK should remain in the EU, or leave.
Our work will build up to an all-school vote on Thursday to coincide with the real EU referendum.
And to mirror the real-life campaigning going on up and down the country, nominated teachers will lead fictional ‘Nexit’ and ‘Normain’ campaigns to try and secure pupil votes.
The teachers will also present their fictional views to pupils in a ‘leaders-debate’ style forum before the whole school.
David Baldwin, Executive Headteacher at Norham High School, said: “At Norham High School, we’re committed to bringing British values to life and we’re passionate about helping our pupils and staff work together to understand the democratic processes.
“The EU referendum is an important moment in our democratic history and our pupils are naturally interested in it. They’re also somewhat unclear about what it means for them.
“We believe it’s really important to nurture a knowledge and interest in democracy and politics at an early age and to help our young people understand what this decision means for the UK and for their generation.
“We also use events like this to challenge and counter those minority radical views that can too often go unnoticed in schools, because we want every child to understand the core values of compassion, respect and tolerance in our local community.
“Our pupils are the voters of the future, and their views are important. We’re looking forward to finding out whether Norham High School votes to stay or go.”
Across the week, pupils will spend time in their tutor groups discussing the referendum, as well as watching campaign video clips and carrying out their own online research on the pros and cons of both sides.
The ‘Nexit or Normain’ result will be announced at a special assembly on Friday 24 June.
